Winners of the 8th edition of the Guayaquil International Film Festival 2022

The Guayaquil International Film Festival It closed its eighth edition on Thursday, September 1, in which the work of women in the cinema predominated, with films by women directors and conversations on this topic.

As is the custom of the film festival, the organization of the event awarded the best films in eight categories with their traditional Golden Iguana, Silver Iguana and honorable mentions.

Mexico was the most awarded country with three awards. Germany, Canada, Ecuador, Spain and Switzerland received two awards at an event organized by the FestiCineGye Foundation.

life in silencefrom Mexico, directed by Rodrigo Arnaz was chosen as Best Fiction Feature Film of the Festivaltaking one golden iguana. The film tells the story of a jazz musician and single father who struggles every day to communicate with his autistic son through music. The plot becomes cloudy when the boy’s mother returns, after eight years of absence, to reveal a truth that will change her life. Available on Amazon Prime Video.

The same medal was taken by the Spanish Pico Reja, the truth that the earth hidesby Remedios Malvárez and Arturo Andújar, as Best Documentary Feature. In this work, Malvárez focuses on the Pico Reja mass grave that had never been opened, located in a Seville cemetery, where it is speculated that more than 2,000 civilian victims originated from Franco’s repression.

This year the new prize was incorporated supercinemaswhich was awarded to the Mexican Ambush, by René Herrera who will receive two weeks of commercial screening at the national level. The tape refers to Nadine, a building administrator, she accompanies a mobster who shows up at the place to search, apartment by apartment, a body that was taken from her and contains something of great value. One after another, the residents of the building are dying.

As for short films, Concertina of the Mexican Gabriel González won as best fiction; The beyondby Daniel Maurer from Switzerland as documentary film; Y from outside from Germany, directed by Diana Menestre, and in the new category Experimental cinemaeach taking the Silver Iguana.

The script by Guido Bajaña, winner of the Guayaquil Lab 2022, was also highlighted. Likewise, within the ceremony a special tribute to Ecuadorian historian Wilma Grandawith the Jorge Suarez Award 2022 to the trajectory, investigation and/or contribution to the national cinematography.

In music videos, the work of Ecuadorian Guido Bajaña with Badaraco´s suite got a honorific mention; as well as mine directed by Hebert Poll & Anna Salas, from Canada, thanks to the public vote on the Festival’s YouTube channel.

The closing ceremony took place at 7:30 p.m. at Supercines Los Ceibos with the screening of manic mikiby the Venezuelan Carla Forte, and starring Carlos Antonio León and Lola Amores. Forte received special recognition for having achieved five participations in the Official Selection in eight years of the Festival’s existence.

The ceremony was hosted by the actress Angie Gonzalez. In this edition they were screened in Supercines more than 50 films from 23 countries and also had face-to-face performances on Santa Cruz Island (Galápagos), thanks to ArtChipiélago.
