The Ministry of Energy and Mines reported this Sunday, June 26, 2022, that in two more days -that is, on Tuesday, June 28- oil production would stop due to the closure of roads and acts of vandalism recorded in the wells during the protests called by the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie) that have already been going on for two weeks.
This State portfolio ensures that each day that passes the hydrocarbon sector registers greater losses and that in these fourteen days of mobilization the State failed to receive around $ 120 million. That money “could have been used for education, health and social work,” he says in a statement.
Petroecuador’s oil production falls by nearly 40% due to indigenous protests
Until June 12 – a day before the stoppages began – average production was 520,000 barrels. Now oil production is at critical levels, since today the figures show a decrease of more than 50%. Therefore, “if this situation continues, in 48 hours the country’s oil production would be suspended, since due to acts of vandalism, taking over wells and closing roads, it has not been possible to transport the supplies and diesel necessary to maintain the operation” .
And in the last two weeks, production has decreased by more than 1.3 million barrels of oil. The biggest loss is recorded by Petroecuador with 1,061,875 barrels, while in private oil companies it is 272,223 barrels.
Government analyzes lowering the price of fuel for the agricultural sector
The Ministry of Energy indicates that 1,176 wells are closed: 996 from the state company and 180 managed by private companies.
Minister Xavier Vera Grunauer asked all citizens who have taken the roads to abandon the measure, because if the logistics for the oil wells are not allowed to pass, production will have to be stopped and “beyond the economic losses that are already representative, the affectation will be for all Ecuadorians”.
