This Thursday is the World Day for Safety and Health at Work and, in this context, Mitxel Lakuntza (ELA) has pointed out that half of work accidents occur in the first two months of work. In the opinion of general secretary of ELA “Many companies are not afraid of inspection, and the number of accidents is an indicator of this.” In an interview granted to the “Faktoria” program of Euskadi Irratia, he stated that the companies do not comply with the law and that the administration places little emphasis on inspection.

On the other hand, he has defended a salary increase in line with inflation. Yesterday, the Minister of Economy and Finance of the Basque Government, Pedro Azpiazu, said that the rise in wages should be moderate and always linked to underlying inflation. However, Lakuntza believes that Azpiazu should know where the origin of the problem is: “The focus is deliberately placed elsewhere, on wages, but the problem is in the energy model.”

ELA will hit the streets on May 1, Labor Day, to protest against precariousness and against the rising cost of life. According to data recently provided by the union, in Hego Euskal Herria there are more than 541,600 precarious jobs. The general secretary of ELA has assured today that “they are not all there” and that only temporary ones are counted, those who do not have a fixed contract, those who have partial contracts and those who do not reach 18,000 euros.

The general secretary of ELA has once again demanded a tax hike: “Those who have maintained neoliberal positions in the past have also said that this is not the time to lower taxes, just the opposite. The IMF too. Even the IMF itself has passed the Basque Government to the left.”

He has also referred to Zedarriak forum who has branded it a “business lobby”. Moreover, he has valued that report in which, according to Lakuntza, they ask the Basque Government to go one step further, and lower taxes and reduce public spending.
