Agap: Peruvian exports of fresh fruits and vegetables will grow 15% in 2022

The Association of Agricultural Producers Guilds of Peru (AGAP) estimated that exports of fresh fruit and vegetables will grow more than 15% by 2022, due to the investments implemented until 2020, the greater promotion of products with potential abroad and the opening of new markets.

During the launch of Agrofest 2022, the first mega event dedicated to modern agriculture in our country, the head of AGAP, Alejandro Fuentes, recalled that shipments abroad of fresh fruits and vegetables totaled a value of US$4.97 billion in 2021, according to Sunat data.

“Fruit and vegetable exports have great growth potential. We trust that by 2023, shipments of these products will continue to grow”, he remarked.

“In order to achieve this, it will undoubtedly be vital to improve regulation, strengthen public-private work, improve the competitiveness of the sector, integrate small farmers more quickly in an associative manner, promote access to new markets and overcome the difficult situation for which the sector is passing”, he added.

According to the guild, among the products that stand out for their potential – and that already lead shipments – are blueberries, organic bananas, asparagus, avocado, artichokes, tangerines, ginger, mango and grapes. . Likewise, garlic, onion and pomegranate stand out, the latter products that will enter the top 5 of the most exported fresh fruits and vegetables from Peru in 2023, calculated AGAP.

Regarding the new markets, Agap specified that the opening of South Africa, Chile, the Philippines and Japan for grapes is expected in the coming months; South Africa, Korea, Japan, Vietnam and Indonesia, for blueberries; New Zealand and Israel, for asparagus; Argentina, Iran, Malaysia, Taiwan, Morocco and South Africa, for mangoes; Mexico, for ginger; and China and the United States, for the pitahaya.

Cherries: an opportunity in Peru?

In dialogue with La República, Fuentes stated that a crop with potential in our territory is the cherry. According to the leader, after exploring grape, avocado and blueberry crops, our country could compete with the production of this berry, a strong market in Chile, on the international stage.

“Until now, no one has been able to find the magic formula to produce good quality cherries naturally in Peru, although tests have been carried out. What is being sought is to produce in that harvest window between September and October, perhaps something in November. The typical window of change between the northern and southern hemispheres”, explained the president of Agap.
