By 2026, it is expected to double the residential connections and the regions with natural gas

By 2026, that is, when the presidential mandate of Pedro Castillo is fulfilled, the goal is for three million families nationwide to have natural gas in their homes, according to the Presidency of the Republic.

As of June of this year, there are 1 million 398,834 residential connections from natural gas throughout Peru. Initial forecasts of the Government foresee that the cheap and clean energy that is extracted from Camisea will be present in 1 million 600,000 homes by the end of 2021.

By 2025, the number of residential users rises considerably to 2 million 585,058, but only considering the current concession regions.

In order to reach three million households, the Government predicts that there will be 20 regions of the country that, at the end of this five-year period, will enjoy the benefits of the hydrocarbon extracted from Block 88.

Currently, 11 regions have natural gas, these are: Lima, Callao, Ica, Ancash, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Cajamarca, Arequipa, Moquegua, Tacna and Piura. In only three regions, gas arrives through the gas pipeline network, while the other group does so through LNG trucks or virtual gas pipelines.

Getting to the finish line

The day before, the Executive made it clear that along with the renegotiation of the contracts with the Camisea Consortium, the policy of massification of natural gas will also be addressed.

In recent statements from Cusco, Prime Minister Mirtha Vásquez affirmed that it will be technically discussed which is the least expensive and quickest proposal to bring gas to more Peruvian homes.

Among the alternatives, some mentioned by the Camisea Consortium itself, as revealed by Vásquez, is advancing in greater infrastructure (gas pipelines) or distributing gas through (LNG) trucks, as is already the case in other concessions in the country.

According to estimates from the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem), a new massification project in the regions of Puno, Cusco, Junín, Huancavelica, Ayacucho, Apurímac and Ucayali, would allow 400,000 families to be connected in five years (starting in 2021) additional.

The investment figure (between infrastructure and installation), and that will be paid with resources from the Fise and / or Sise, is slightly higher than US $ 1,020 million, an amount five times greater than the investment of the defunct 7 Regions project, but which, unlike the new scheme, sought to bring gas to the regions through trucks; Therefore, it follows that the new gas project for the non-concessioned regions will be carried out through gas pipelines.

Likewise, it is proposed that Petroperú – with Fise resources – be the one on behalf of the State to be in charge of the development of the gas networks.

Agreements with Bolivia regarding gas

Within the framework of the Meeting of the Binational Ministerial Cabinet of Peru-Bolivia Ministers, the Minem signed four cooperation agreements with its Bolivian peers.

One of them will develop studies to determine the technical and economic feasibility of interconnecting the project to build a gas pipeline to the south with a possible pipeline from Bolivia.

Another agreement signed yesterday is to implement a LPG commercialization project that will contribute to supplying the south and benefit the population with more accessible and competitive prices.
