New corona requirements in Europe: worry about less growth

The Delta variant has already established itself in many European countries, and the proven infections with Sars-Cov-2 are increasing again.

Economists now fear that renewed travel restrictions and possible curfews could have a negative impact on the economy. The easing that had been decided in the past few months had only just caused a recovery.

Last week, the EU Commission issued its forecasts for growth in 2021: 4.8 percent, after a record decline of 6.0 percent in 2020.

On Friday, Spain was declared a risk area by both Germany and France. In the middle of the main season, that’s a big blow for tourism.

Corona rules also apply again in Portugal: Vacationers have to prove a full vaccination or a negative test or a recovery from Covid-19 when staying at a hotel or visiting a restaurant in many regions.

There are also new requirements for visiting bars and restaurants in the Netherlands. Clubs and discos have to close again from Saturday. Festivals and other major events without fixed seats, where no safe distance can be maintained, are again prohibited.

The seven-day incidence in the country is around 225. Most recently, around 7,000 new infections were registered within 24 hours – around seven times as many as in the previous week. In a discotheque in Enschede near the German border alone, 200 people were infected, mostly young people. Access was only possible with a negative test result. Apparently there were many forgeries.
