The Basque Government has raised in the Sectorial Conference for the Plan of response to the war of Ukraine the adoption of “urgent” measures aimed, among other objectives, at “solving the problem of energy prices” and finding “supply alternatives” to avoid business stoppages.
The Minister of Economy and Finance, Pedro Azpiazúhas appeared before journalists at the end of the aforementioned conference -held electronically between the autonomous communities and the Minister of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño- to report on the position maintained by the regional government.
Also participating in the conference were the Second Vice-Lehendakari and Minister of Labor and Employment, Idoia Mendia; the Minister for Public Governance and Self-Government, Olatz Garamendi, and the Minister for Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment, Arantxa Tapia.
The Basque Government, which tomorrow will announce the measures that “are in its power” and that it will deploy “urgently”, has expressed at the meeting its “complete layout” to collaborate with the Spanish Executive, which has demanded measures “effective, fast and forceful” to “cushion the effects of the armed conflict”.
Thus, he has demanded a solution to the rise of energy prices, especially fuels, something “crucial” for the Basque productive fabric, from the primary to the industrial sector. “At the moment we find industries that have stopped their activity,” warned the counselor.
It has also demanded “immediate” measures, albeit “temporary” ones, that will make it possible to put an end to the truckers’ strike without waiting for the 29th, the date on which the Government of Spain has announced that it will make fuel cheaper.
Tapia asks for transitory solutions now
The Minister for Economic Development, Arantxa Tapia, has called for “temporary solutions” to reduce fuel prices because “we cannot wait for the 29th.”
Speaking to the press during a financial session in Bilbao, the minister explained that with the prices of energy for electro-intensive industries and fuels plus the transport strike “we find supplies limited or cut off and many companies forced to stop their production”.
