Bittor Oroz: “The sector cannot continue working without adding that current extra cost to the final price”

Given the delicate situation that the primary sector in recent years and months, Bittor OrozDeputy Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Policy of the Basque Government, explained that the sector needs help, since “the cost overruns have risen very quickly“.

On ETB1’s “Egun on Euskadi” program this Monday, Oroz stressed that “the sector cannot be required to continue working without adding that momentary price overrun to the final price”, and believes that there is only one way to solve it: “There is some costs that must be analyzed. all chain agents that they at least agree to pay them,” he said.

To this end, he recalled that the Euskadi Food and Wood Chain Observatory has been created, with which the aim is to guarantee “fair, loyal and effective” competition, maintaining an “adequate” level of prices from basic production costs. Oroz considers that, if they don’t, it is impossible to move forward, since the primary sector will always be “subject to rising feed prices, diesel…”.

“We are working on it, and the base is already laid,” he indicated. “An agreement was signed to agree on a methodology to calculate these costs and now we have to ask the agents to be responsible,” she said. “We cannot ask our baserritarras, our arantzales, our producers… to work for less than what it costs them“, has added.

Oroz is convinced that they have already found the right system to solve it, and believes that “now we need a great agreement as quickly as possible to agree among all another way to build the price“.
