Proposals from the private sector are compiled to be presented at the 37th FAO Regional Conference

Promoting a fishing policy with traceability, sustainability and focused on the needs of the sector were some of the proposals and commitments that were presented during the related event “Contributions of the fishing sector for sustainable development”, which took place on Friday in the city of Manta , Manabi province.

The event was also part of a public-private dialogue, in which proposals from the private sector were compiled to include them in the country position that will be presented during the 37th FAO Regional Conferenceto be held in Quito from March 28 to April 1 next.

The conference will bring together officials from 33 member states of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Latin America and the Caribbean (FAO) and it will be a space for debate on the challenges of agriculture and food security in the region.

In addition, work guidelines will be established for the next two years.

In that framework, the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Pedro Álavabeside Agustín Zimmermann, FAO representative in Ecuadorheld meetings last week with representatives of the banana, animal protein and fishery sectors.

In this event, Luis Muñoz, Deputy Minister of Rural Development of the MAGindicated that in Ecuador around 6.5 million liters of milk are produced daily and there are approximately 4.5 million head of cattle.

“The MAG works on public policies to strengthen the sector and its contributions will be part of the 37th FAO Regional Conference,” said the manager.

For his part, Álava reiterated that through these related events a public-private dialogue is promoted, to collect different visions, which are not strictly official, so that the sectors contribute with inputs and data for participation in the international event.

Meanwhile, Zimmermann stressed that the conference will be held in Ecuador after 73 years.

Also participating in the event the Minister of Production, Foreign Trade, Investments and Fisheries, Julio José Prado, who highlighted the economic and social contribution that fishing makes to the country and indicated that this is one of the 20 prioritized productive sectors in which the Government works.
