At the moment, Mercabilbao sees no danger of shortages due to the transport strike

In any case, if it continues over time, one of the biggest problems could be in the fruit and vegetable sector. Some perishable products have already begun to be scarce, such as tomatoes and strawberries, due to the lack of truck access.

Mercabilbao believes that there is no danger of food shortages due to the transport strike and the stoppage of the inshore fleets due to the stockpiling of merchandise that took place before the indefinite stoppage of truckers began.

The reduction in the consumption of end customer due to the rise in food prices, is also helping to ensure that there is no danger of product supply, for now, since the wholesale to retail sales are carried out “as in a normal week”.

If the strike continues, one of the biggest supply problems could occur in the fruit and vegetable sector, as explained by the president of the MercaBilbao fruit and vegetable wholesalers, Gorka Moreno, on Radio Euskadi’s “Ganbara”. The transport strike is affecting the arrival of these products, due to the blockades that the trucks that transport them to Bilbao suffer at origin (Almería, fundamentally).

He has admitted that some perishable products are beginning to be scarce, such as tomato and strawberry due to lack of entry of trucks to Mercabilbao since Monday. What fruit and vegetable wholesalers have noticed is that consumption in stores or supermarkets has dropped, so sales are taking place normally these days.

This decrease in the final consumption of the products they sell has also been noted by wholesalers in the seafood and fish industry from the Bilbao supply center. One of the representatives, Alma Crespo, explained that, for now, gender also continues to enter, despite the strike of some inshore fleets, both Basque and from some ports on the Cantabrian coast.

“Seafood and fish are arriving without problems, for now, from France, Scotland and some ports in the Bay of Biscay, such as Pasajes, Bermeo, Avilés or Laredo”, he specified. However, he has pointed out that there are certain species such as the rock scorpionfish, imported red mullet and rooster or the Galician monkfish, which are missing from their counters
