International organization trains port collaborators and export companies to minimize the contamination of drug containers

During 2021, 8,657 people in the country, including port collaborators and employees of exporting companies, received certifications from Business Alliance for Secure Commerce (BASC), an international organization that promotes safe trade in order to minimize the risk of contamination of drug containers.

Last year, the institution gave 412 courses in Pichincha, Umiña, Azuay and Guayaquil. Only in the city of Buenos Aires, 33 paid conferences were given, 21 courses in companies and 82 free talks.

According to Fabricio Muñoz, executive director of BASC Guayaquil Chapter, the BASC certification helps minimize the risks of contamination by drugs, smuggling, terrorism, money laundering, theft and other related crimes.

To prevent drug trafficking, Muñoz explained that it is important to establish controls in all the links of the foreign trade chain; that is, since the unit is loaded at the plantation or collection center, on the way to the port, at the port terminals and on the ship that transports them. Similarly if it is airway.

“Traceability is achieved with records and controls in all the operations of the companies involved and their business associates, with documents for each procedure, responsibility signatures, delivery and reception records, photos, videos, etc. By following all the protocols, if necessary, you will be able at a certain moment to demonstrate that it is not immersed in anything illegal and rather has been used or contaminated, proving that somewhere a security procedure was broken or misused,” he said. Munoz.

From the first months that the pandemic began until December 2021, the training has been carried out virtually. Among the training offered is the training of internal auditors, which includes topics such as interpretation of the standard and preparation of the BASC manual; risk management and internal audit. In addition to container security to train attendees in the security measures of cargo units and how to prevent contamination, among others. These courses can be taught at the facilities of affiliated companies.

“We teach leadership courses on the BASC control and security management system for company managers so that they get involved and lead the system; the training and updating courses for internal auditors and middle managers and the rest of the courses can be taken by the administrative or operational personnel that the company deems necessary”, Muñoz pointed out, who indicated that for this year courses will be held in both modalities: online and face-to-face, which will have a capacity of 50%. Attendees must comply with biosecurity measures, Muñoz explained.

World BASC Organizationwhich is present in 11 countries in the Americas, has delivered certifications to 3,800 companies, of which around 1,000 belong to Ecuador. (D)
