Southern Peru: Community demands are impossible to meet

The president of Southern Peru, Óscar González Rocha, maintained that the central government has not taken the corresponding actions and has left the Cuajone mine unprotected against the blocking of roads and cutting off the water supply by the peasant community of Tumilaca, Pocata. , Coscore and Tala, in Moquegua.

Likewise, it indicated that Southern Peru Copper Corporation has filed the respective complaints with the competent authorities without receiving any response. “No support measures have been taken (by) the Judiciary and the Police,” he told the Regional Communication Network (RCR).

In addition, he added that the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM), the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem), and company personnel participated in a dialogue with the communities without reaching any agreement.

In this sense, Gonzáles Rocha stated that the demands of the communities are impossible to meet. “We do not believe that any agreement will be reached, because the people led by Iván Mendoza are asking for US$ 5,000 million in compensation because, according to them, we have used the land of their communities,” he stressed.

He explained that Southern Peru has a legal concession from Minem. “(According to) the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, everything is in order. This (the blockade and the water cuts) means that we cannot produce and that the people who live in the Cuajone camp cannot have water to survive,” he indicated.

Gonzáles also affirmed that the principle of legal certainty (in Peru) has been violated with roadblocks and water cuts perpetrated by the communities. He warned that this situation will affect production and reduce tax contributions to the State.

“Yes, there is a (legal) vulnerability and the authority is not taking the corresponding actions. Dialogue has not been able to solve the problem either, because these people do not give in and think they are right,” he maintained.

Finally, he mentioned that the country received only from Southern in the months of January and February of this year, US$233 million in taxes, US$53 million more than in the same two months of the year 2021. “That is something that I shouldn’t stop receiving,” he declared.
