The president of the Guilds of Gipuzkoa, Eugenio Elduaien, explained that given the lack of transport to distribute the caught fish and the impossibility of preserving it, it is absurd to go fishing.
The strike being carried out by Hegoalde carriers is having a direct impact on the fishing sector. Today, they have met again and have decided not to set sail until Monday, as reported by the president of the Gipuzkoa Brotherhoods, Eugenio Elduaien, to eitb.eus. The decision will affect purse seine fishing throughout the Cantabrian.
Also yesterday, most of the boats were stopped. Elduaien explained that given the lack of transportation to distribute the caught fish and the impossibility of preserving it, it is absurd to go fishing.
“We have not gone on strike, but we depend on the carriers, and as long as it is not resolved, every hour that passes harms us that situation,” Elduaien considered.
“We are afraid because we know when these things start but not when they end,” he added.
Meanwhile, the fishing sector meets today with the Government of Spain in Madrid to address the rise in fuel prices. Tomorrow, the Basque fisherfolk will meet with the Minister for Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment, Arantxa Tapia, to ask her to help alleviate the situation through direct or indirect aid.
In fact, he has insisted that they cannot pay the fuel bill at current prices and has indicated that, depending on the answers they receive in these meetings, they will meet again on Friday and decide what to do from Monday.
