The Statute of Consumers broadens the definition of “vulnerable people”

“The current law is almost 20 years old, so it was necessary to modify it, among other things, because the areas of consumption have changed a lot,” said Hurtado.

The Minister of Tourism, Commerce and Consumption of the Basque Government, Javier Hurtado, presented this Tuesday the preliminary draft of the Statute Law for Consumers and Users in the Basque Country. After its approval, the project will be sent to the Basque Parliament for subsequent parliamentary processing.

“The current law has almost 20 yearsso it was necessary to modify it, among other things, because they have changed a lot consumer areas”said Hurtado.

Thus, the new law will seek to “strengthen the leading role of the Basque Consumer Institute, KontsumoBIDEand provide it with new instruments to contribute to a better defense of the consuming peopleespecially those who are vulnerable”.

To do this, they will expand the definition of “vulnerable people”, since those who are temporarily vulnerable will also enter that group. “The statute establishes that the public powers will preferentially focus on protecting the rights of said group. The sanctions regime will be in charge of protecting them”, he underlined.
