As recognized by the port authority in a statement, throughout the morning there have been “partial stoppages, supported by transport platforms, mainly general merchandise.”
The strike of autonomous carriers grouped in the Hiru union and the Association of Carriers of Navarra, Tradisna, which began this Monday in Hegoalde, has caused partial strikes throughout the morning at the facilities of the Port of Bilbao.
In Navarra, the carriers have concentrated on the accesses to the Transportation City.
The strike in Navarra, supported by Tradisna, which represents the self-employed and small companies in the sector, has developed without notable incidents, as reported by the Foral Police, which has reported the presence of pickets around 08:45 a.m. in the Polígono Agustinos in the Pamplona region and in the Post Office building.
In the Basque Country, a caravan of trucks has traveled through the central streets of Donostia-San Sebastián to demand improvements in their working conditions, but key points such as the Biriatu border have not been affected.
Hiru decided last Saturday in an extraordinary assembly to join the indefinite strike called by the Platform for the Defense of Transport against the price of fuel.
In addition to the strike, Hiru plans to carry out various demonstrations, one of them next Wednesday in Vitoria-Gasteiz. East Tuesday autonomous carriers will concentrate in Pamplona.
As recognized by the port authority in a statement, throughout the morning there have been “partial stoppages, supported by transport platforms, mainly general merchandise”, although it has not provided data regarding their incidence.
With the protest started this Monday, Hiru claims “the need to review transport rates according to the increase in the price of diesel at least every fifteen days or a month.”
Interviewed in the Euskadi Irratia program “Faktoria”the head of communication at Hiru, Jon Altuna, and the member of Tradisna’s management, Iñigo Goñi, denounce that in this situation “it is more profitable to stand still than to start the truck”.
According to Goñi, the strike, an initiative of the Spanish Platform for the Defense of the Road Freight Transport Sector that Tradisna supports, “goes a long way” since the list of demands is “long”.
Hiru’s representative, Jon Altuna, adds that the situation of the carriers “is very serious”, and that the demands of the Basque union “are very similar” to those of the Spanish platform. “In December, the employers agreed on several measures with the Spanish government, but then they have to be fulfilled”, something that has not happened, in his words.
