The president of the Gipuzkoa Fishermen’s Association has stated that they need transport to distribute the fish and that they are concerned about what is happening.
A part of the fishermen of the Basque Autonomous Community (CAV) have been left without fishing this Monday as a result of the indefinite strike in the transport sector to which thousands of carriers from the CAV and Navarra have joined.
The president of the Gipuzkoa Fishermen’s Association, Eugenio Elduayen, has assured that there is no point in going fishing if there is no transport to distribute the merchandise when arriving at the port.
Asked on Euskadi Irratia’s “Faktoria” program about the indefinite transportation strike in Hegoalde, Elduayen stated that “we need transportation” to distribute the fish and “we are concerned about what is happening.”
This afternoon at 3:00 p.m. a meeting of the Gipuzkoa Brotherhood is scheduled to analyze the situation and make a decision.
The Minister of Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment, Arantxa Tapiahas announced that next Wednesday a meeting will be held with the Basque primary sector to analyze the effects of the war in Ukraine on fishermen, farmers and ranchers.
Tapia made these statements to journalists this Monday in Bordeaux (France), where he is participating in the New Aquitaine-Euskadi-Navarra Euroregion Assembly, together with the Lehendakari, IƱigo Urkullu.
The minister referred to the indefinite strike called by the transport sector in protest at high fuel prices, which affects all sectors, including the primary sector, with which the Basque Government will meet this week.
The Minister has confirmed that the Basque inshore fishermen have decided to go out fishing, although with “some concern” about the effects that the transport strike could have on their activity.
Tapia has assured that the situation becomes “unsustainable” when the price of energy, of fuels, increases and the extra cost cannot later be passed on to the product that reaches stores.
The minister has once again asked Europe for concrete measures to alleviate this situation, among them, separating the price of electricity and gas, since this “would help fossil fuels to be more contained”, and also set some “maximum” in “energy prices as a whole”.
It has also demanded that measures be established from Europe such as those promoted during the covid-19 pandemic, including direct aid, that allow the activity to continue.
