Unions calling for the transport strike: “It is more profitable to stand still than to start the truck”

The representatives of Hiru and Tradisna affirm that the strike “is going to be long” since the list of demands is “long”. “In December, the employers agreed on several measures with the Spanish government, but then they have to be fulfilled,” they warn.

Most carriers grouped in unions hiru and the Association of Carriers of Navarra, Tradisna, are supporting the indefinite strike to protest the rising cost of diesel. Interviewed on Euskadi Irratia’s “Faktoria” program, Hiru’s head of communication, Jon Altunaand the member of Tradisna’s management, Inigo Gonidenounce that in this situation “it is more profitable to be stopped than to start the truck”.

According to Goñi, the strike, an initiative of the Spanish Platform for the Defense of the Road Freight Transport Sector that Tradisna supports, “will for long” since the list of requests is “long”.

The representative of hiru, Jon Altuna, adds that the situation of the carriers “is very serious”, and that the demands of the Basque union “are very similar” to those of the Spanish platform. “In December, the employers agreed on several measures with the Spanish government, but then they have to be fulfilled”, something that has not happened, in his words.

He explained that on Saturday the strike call was voted in an assembly, and that the majority supported it. “It became clear that rates need to be updatedevery month or even every week, because we don’t know how much diesel is going to rise, and in these conditions you can’t work,” he says.

However, he has confessed that several associates have agreed to increases in rates, and that thanks to this, they will be working today. “Some employers are behaving well, and are willing to pay what they have to pay,” he explains.
