Pasco: mining tailings in danger of collapsing due to extreme rains and hailstorms

The state company specialized in remediation of environmental liabilities, Mining Assets SAC (Amsac), warned that the tailings contained in Quiulacocha (Simón Bolívar district, pasco region) they are in risk of collapse. This is due to the heavy rains and hailstorms that the area has been suffering for several weeks.

Rainfall in Pasco led to the “rapid loss of free edge of tailings 61 cm. (on January 14) at 46 cm. (today)”, explained the general manager of AmsacAntonio Montenegro, through a press release.

Amsac indicated that since February they have been demanding that the Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER) Pasco and the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) to take “urgent actions in the face of the imminent overflow of the Quiulacocha tailings dam”. Such a contingency would endanger the populations of Quiulacocha, Rancas and Yurajhuanca, in addition to contaminating the waters of the Ragra and San Juan rivers.

They ask for the intervention of ANA and OEFA

The manager of Amsac reported that they have asked the National Water Authority (ANA) and the Environmental Assessment and Enforcement Agency (OEFA) that authorize the transfer of excess acid water accumulated in the tailings dam Quiulacocha, owned by the state. The waste would be destined for the Yanamate acid water deposit, under the control of Cerro SAC.

“This pumping, with a power of 1,800 horsepower, would allow moving (during the emergency period) a volume of approximately 9,000 cubic meters per day. However, this requires the prior and joint authorization of its management, control and inspection entities”, explained Montenegro.

The official of Amsac indicated that, if they had the authorization, they would activate the request to Cerro SAC to enable its conduction pipes. As reported, these were previously withdrawn in sections by disposition of the ANA.
