Congress leaves the election of the members of the BCRP to the Board of Spokespersons

The Plenary session of the Congress of the Republic approved the text of motions 81 and 140, which propose the creation of a multiparty commission, composed only of representatives of the Board of Spokespersons, for the election of the three directors that are missing from the Central Reserve Bank (BCRP).

With 74 votes in favor, 40 against and 4 abstentions, the decentralized Plenary, headed by the head of Parliament, Maricarmen Alva, decided on the formation of this group that, from now on, will be the only one that will be able to propose and elect the candidates for take the place left by Elmer Cuba, Rafael Rey and José Chlimper.

This decision demolishes the creation of a special commission to define the profile of the next three directors of the highest issuing entity, after the Executive complied with ratifying Julio Velarde as head and the shortlist made up of the renowned economists Roxana Barrantes, José Távara and Germán Alarco.

Not long ago, Julio Velarde himself had requested that the election, from Congress, of the next three members at the BCRP table be adjusted to technical and non-political criteria, in the midst of a context marked by the volatility of the dollar and flight of capitals.

“This Congress is approving that the Board of Spokespersons be the one that elects the candidates to the BCRP instead of a special commission. The excuse? That there is no time to lose. If there was real interest and haste, this issue would have been discussed on August 12, “said Congresswoman Sigrid Bazán.

The Board of Spokespersons is made up of the Board of Directors of Congress and the following representatives per bench: Waldemar Rojas (Free Peru), Carlos Zeballos (Popular Action), Hernando Guerra (Popular Force), Eduardo Salhuana (Alliance for Progress), Jorge Montoya (Popular Renewal), José Jerí (We are Peru), Ruth Luque (Together for the Peru), José Williams (Avanza País) and José Luna Gálvez (Podemos Peru).
