Francke: Tax evasion costs Peru twice its education budget per year

The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) reported that, currently, the annual cost of tax evasion in Peru amounts to 8% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which for the current year would represent three times the health budget or twice its education budget.

As part of the presentation to the media of the package of financial reforms that the Executive will bring to Congress, Minister Pedro Francke remarked that the objective of his administration is to introduce Peru among the economies with a better OECD tax scheme.

Likewise, it was known that this annual cost by entrepreneurs of all levels that do not comply with their tax obligations represents ten times the budget allocated to social protection, such as programs such as Cuna Más or Pensión 65, as well as eleven times their sanitation budget.

This figure was calculated based on the GDP projected for this year by the 2022-2025 Multiannual Macroeconomic Framework and the initial opening budget for 2021, with data from the National Superintendency of Customs and Tax Administration (Sunat) and the MEF.

MEF: Tax reform to raise S / 12,000 million

At another time, Minister Pedro Francke revealed that the tax reform would allow an additional 12,000 million revenue to be increased per year, which means an increase of 1 and a half points in GDP.

“We calculate to increase the collection by 1 point and a half of GDP in a relatively short term and that means an additional 12 billion soles per year,” said the head of the MEF at a press conference.

He also said that these measures tend to have an impact in the short term due to additional rates and tax policy, and some taxes that will mature over time.
