Greenpeace denounces in front of a Russian methane tanker that the gas that enters through the port of Bilbao finances the war

Greenpeace has stated that it is the export of gas and oil that “finances Putin’s war machine”, in addition to “using Europe’s energy dependence as a weapon”.

Two Greenpeace activists have protested this Tuesday from a canoe against the Russian gas tanker that is unloading in the port of Bilbao, in the regasification plant located in the port facilities in Zierbena.

The members of the environmental group have exhibited two banners with the slogans “No to war” and “Gas finances war”.

In a note, Greenpeace, which has condemned the Russian invasion and has shown solidarity with the Ukrainian population, has asked the “European leaders, meeting these days, show climate ambition and reduce imports of fossil fuels”.

Greenpeace has stated that it is the export of gas and oil that “finances Putin’s war machine”, in addition to “using Europe’s energy dependence as a weapon”.

The environmental group has argued that given the rise in energy and dependence on Russian gas, “searching for new sources of gas imports, investment in new gas infrastructures or alternative fuels will not solve Europe’s vulnerability to energy crises and will continue to aggravate the climate crisis”.

Thus, it has asked the Spanish Government to “abandon its position of investing in a new infrastructure to turn Spain into the European center of gas”, such as the midcat pipeline connection with France or the Gijón regasification plant, and that it “invest only in democratic and fair renewable energy”.
