Tapia: “The first decision must be European to decouple the price of electricity from gas”

The Minister of Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment of the Basque Government, Arantxa Tapiaspoke this morning about the energy costs and of the energy dependency in a context of sharp price increases due to the war in Ukraine. Speaking to the ETB1 program “Egun on Euskadi”, he stressed that the first decision must come from Europe to decouple the price of electricity from gas. Likewise, he has defended the path of energy sovereignty, and advocates producing energy here.

On the other hand, Tapia has highlighted the need to commit to produce the energy “here” and make decisions to make it so. According to the data provided by the minister, currently 90% of the energy consumed comes from abroad.

Tapia believes that the commitment to renewable energy must be “real” and that in that case projects must be accelerated. Within renewable energies, he has mentioned wind and photovoltaic.

Asked by the nuclear energy, considers that this door is closed in Euskadi: “That debate is closed in our country, but France, for example, has opted to open 20 new nuclear power plants”.

In Tapia’s opinion, the economic aid to deal with the situation they will come from Europe: “We are in an emergency situation, it is a special situation and the main aid will be established in Europe”.
