Elkarrekin-Podemos asks to put a stop to the “energy oligopoly” in the Basque Country with a bill

The parliamentarian of the purple coalition David Soto has explained that his group proposes that the public company be set up with an investment of 100 million euros to promote different projects focused on renewables until they obtain their own income.

Elkarrekin Podemos-IU has highlighted this Wednesday the need to create a Basque public energy company renewables to put a stop to the “energy oligopoly” in Euskadi that “does not want to give up” its benefits.

The parliamentarian of the purple coalition David Soto has appeared at a press conference one day before the plenary session of the Basque Chamber votes to take into consideration a bill of this group in which he proposes the creation of a public company focused on renewables.

The initiative will not continue processing in Parliament because it will foreseeably be rejected by the PNV and PSE-EE, groups with a majority in the Chamber that make up the Basque Government, which have already positioned themselves against this proposal.

The Regional executive argues that it is not necessary the constitution of this new public body since since 1982 it has had an energy agency, the Basque Energy Entity (EVE), with the functions and powers proposed by Elkarrekin Podemos-IU.

Soto recalled that the current rise in energy prices is not due exclusively to the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but is also influenced by “clientelism generated in recent decades by an energy oligopoly.”

The energy policy of the Basque Government, he denounced, “has served for Iberdrola to break record profits year after year.” He has explained that his group proposes that the public company be established with an investment of 100 million euros to promote different projects focused on renewables until they obtain their own income.

Said company, has indicated, would promote the energy rehabilitation of buildings, cooperatives for housing and companies not associated “with the oligopoly”so with the creation of a marketer to sell energy at a price of about 35 euros per megawatt.

The medium-term objective, assures the formation, is advancing “energy sovereignty” and perform a social function “by favoring the irruption of a public operator in an oligopolistic market”.
