However, the director general of the Basque Energy Entity has asked the European Commission for “urgent measures to reduce these crazy prices” of energy. Otherwise, “we could see the closure of companies in the Basque Country.”
The General Director of the Basque Energy Entity (EVE), Inigo Ansolaassures that the Basque Country is very well positioned in gas infrastructures, and that means that “the fear of gas shortage does not exist” because the Basque Autonomous Community (CAV) “does not depend only on Russian gas and we can replace it with gas from other parts of the world”.
However, Ansola has warned that “the price of energy in the global market is costing us much more money”, and has added that “if this madness continues we could see the closure of companies in Euskadi because of unaffordable prices for companies with large consumption”. That is why he has asked the European Commission for “urgent, very fast measures that reduce these crazy prices”.
Interviewed on Radio Euskadi, Ansola lamented the humanitarian situation in Ukraine and the high energy prices “that we never would have thought of having”. In this sense, he has underlined that despite being large consumers of energy “we try to be independent and efficient energetically” and for this it has opted “yes or yes” for a “mix of renewable energies, wind and photovoltaic, in large and medium-generation plants, as well as self-consumption”.
Ansola has recalled that Euskadi consumes a 43% energy derived from oil, especially for transportation, and that oil comes from all over the world. While the natural gasis used both for industry and for electricity generation, and represents 3. 4 % Of consumption. The rest of the consumption comes from renewable energies.
Given these data, the director of the EVE has insisted that it is necessary to “accelerate” the energy transition and speed up these renewable technologies as much as possible. “Renewable energies have a great benefit, they have very competitive prices, they are affordable and that helps us to to think that we have to bet on these technologies, both wind and photovoltaic”.
Asked about the situation in Europe, the director general of the Basque Entity explained that European countries are in a low gas storage situation, and that if this crisis continues they will have problems filling all storage systems for next winter .
That is why he has concluded that “the best thing that can happen to us is that there is a lot of negotiation between the countries, sanity prevails and this bloodletting ends as soon as possible.”
