Las Bambas: mining company does not send copper to the port of Matarani since March 1

Due to the blockade carried out by protesters from the community of Urinsaya in the Cusco province of Espinar, the mining company MMG Las Bambas has not sent copper to the port of Matarani in Arequipa, according to the Bloomberg agency.

However, the source cited by the agency explained that copper production remains at normal levels.

The community members of the town of Urinsaya claim to be considered as an area of direct social and environmental influence of the mining company due to the environmental impacts caused by the passage of the mineral concentrate transported in trucks.

The mining company, for its part, has asked them to declare them an “area of social and environmental interest” and give them the same treatment as the communities of Ccapacmarca (Chumbivilcas)but the community members did not accept.

Now the president of the Council of Ministers, Aníbal Torres, is expected to arrive in the area on Thursday to listen to the demands of the population that keeps the mining corridor blocked.
