Chile’s mining production falls 6.3% in January due to lower activity

According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE) of Chile, lmining production fell 6.3% in January compared to the same month in 2021 due to lower activity in metal mining.

The entity of the southern country highlighted that the production in the metal mining fell 8.1% “as a result of a drop in the extraction and processing of copper” as a consequence of “less ore treatment”.

For its part, non-metallic mining increased 29% due to “greater production of lithium carbonate.”

Chile is responsible for more than 25% of the global supply of copper, and the mining industry remained operational throughout the coronavirus pandemic and in recent months was favored by the increase in the international price of the metal.

In 2021, the value of copper It reached its historical maximum in 2021, above 10,000 dollars a ton, driven by strong demand, especially from China, which absorbs half of world production.

With an annual production that exceeds 5.6 million metric tons of copperthis activity contributes between 10% and 15% of the Chilean GDP.
