Arequipa: export of essential products increased by 25%

In the last two years, since the start of the pandemic, Arequipa has grown 25% in export of basic necessities. The avocado, pomegranate and grape they are the most shipped from the region to various international markets.

Julver Vilca Espinozahead of the Plant Health area of ​​the National Agricultural Health Service (Senasa) in Arequipa, reported that the figures also increased in traditional foods such as potato, onion and carrot.

Currently, the most exported products are avocado and grape, above all, from La Joya and El Pedregal. These are shipped to major markets such as the United States, Canada, Japan, China, among others.

There are also other products that are exported from provinces such as Caylloma, Caravelí and Arequipa. It is estimated that currently more than 3,000 farmers in the region are engaged in export.

The specialist added that there are new products that have been adapted to the conditions in Arequipa, such as blueberries and pitahaya. “We have the domestic market supplied and with exports we seek a better quality of life for producers. We have the capacity and ecological floors that the market demands”, he added.

Plague affected corn crops

A fungal plague affected 2.8 hectares of corn a few days ago in the district of Choco, province of Castilla. Vilca Espinoza explained that the higher humidity and rains that are recorded in this season is conducive to the proliferation of this type of pest.

The specialists visited six hectares of corn fields in this jurisdiction and concluded that almost 50% of the properties evaluated are affected. The properties belong to eight families.

Corn production represents one of the most important economic activities in the province; therefore, producers were encouraged to carry out a permanent monitoring of your plotsso that they can report any occurrence to SENASA.

In 2021, in Arequipa, SENASA attended an average of 59 notifications for the presence of pests in different crops; of which, three notifications were related to corn cultivation.
