When the Executive began to outline the parameters on the massification of gas (regional infrastructure and southern gas pipeline) and the renegotiation of gas contracts (creation of the Multisectoral Commission), the president Pedro Castillo he insisted on the idea of nationalizing the Camisea gas.
On the eve, the president urged the Congress to work on a joint law to nationalize Camisea gas; However, almost 24 hours later, Castillo rectified the message and, through his social networks, stated that the Government is and will be respectful of business freedom.
“The gas pipeline that will take gas to the south of the country is our priority, as well as its overcrowding for the benefit of all Peruvians. That is our commitment to the people and we will fulfill it, “he said.
In this regard, SNMPE agreed that the massification of gas is urgent. He added that for this to happen it is necessary for the Government to define public policy guidelines that allow the construction of a network of pipelines in order to bring gas to more homes.
Currently, natural gas arrives through the gas pipeline network to Lima, Callao, Ica and Piura. Meanwhile, the energy from Block 88 also reaches Áncash, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Cajamarca, Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna, but through LNG trucks or virtual gas pipelines.
It is important to highlight that last weekend Castillo pointed out that the massification of natural gas will go hand in hand with the renegotiation with Camisea.
Be careful with expectations
The idea of nationalizing is not new; however, economic agents could react unfavorably. This was warned by Julio Velarde, president of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP), who pointed out that business expectations for this month of October could not improve due to the president’s recent statements, who this last Monday, October 25, urged Congress to work together on a law that nationalizes or nationalizes gas from Camisea.
“The August surveys were very negative, they improved in September and we expected that they (companies’ expectations) will improve strongly in October, but after yesterday’s announcement it may not be with the intensity that we anticipate,” Velarde said during his participation. in the forum ‘Trust for economic development: Managing change’, organized by AmCham Peru.
Yesterday the Lima Stock Exchange (BVL) closed the day in negative territory, which closed the streak of gains that had been achieving for three weeks. At the close of operations, the S & P / BVL Peru General Index, the most representative of the Lima stock market, registered a drop of 1.12%. While the S & P / BVL Peru Selective Index, which is made up of the 15 most traded shares in the local market, posted a 1.20% decline.
“Nationalizing is not synonymous with nationalizing”
For the economist and researcher Jose de EchaveWhen we speak of nationalization, it is that this natural resource has a national use. “That for me is associated with the massification of gas and negotiations with companies.”
“We are facing a government that wants to massify gas, which seems correct to me, and that is the feeling of a logic of nationalization, that the resource that exists is for the benefit of Peruvians and the interior of the country where the process of home connection progressed very slowly. This is not synonymous with nationalization ”, he stressed.
The word
Pedro Castillo, President of the Republic
“As the people’s government, we are and will be respectful of freedom of business.”
