In 2021 there were more unemployed women than men, according to INEC figures

In 2021, the unemployment rate at the national level was 5.2%, at the urban level this rate was 6.8% and at the rural level it was 2.3%, according to the National Survey of Employment, Unemployment and Underemployment ( Enemdu) annual published by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Inec). The second quarter of the year was the one that showed the highest rate, with 5.5%; the first quarter had a rate of 5.4%, while in the third and fourth quarters it was 5.1% and 4.7%, respectively, the latter being the lowest of the year.

At the provincial level, Pichincha and Esmeraldas register the highest unemployment rates, with 10.8% and 10.0%, respectively. Meanwhile, Bolívar and Morona Santiago presented the lowest unemployment rates, with 1.1% and 1.4%.

Regarding the characterization of the unemployed population, at the national level, women (6.7%) have a higher rate than men (4.2%); the same situation is observed in urban and rural areas.

Meanwhile, the adequate employment rate at the national level was 32.5%; at the urban level, 39.8%; and at the rural level, 18.7%. Likewise, Pichincha is present as the province with the highest rate of adequate employment, with 43.6%; followed by Guayas, with 37.4%, according to the survey.

In the right job, the survey reflects the supremacy of men in this area. The adequate employment rate for men is 37.8%, compared to 25.5% for women. Regarding the age groups, this is mainly concentrated in the population between 30 and 44 years old.

As for underemployment, it was 23.2%; in the urban area, 22.8%; and in the rural area, 24.0%. At the provincial level, the highest underemployment rates were found in Napo (28.7%), Santa Elena (28.2%), Manabí (26.8%) and Los Ríos (26.0%).

The rate of other non-full employment for 2021 at the national level was 27.1%; at the urban level, 24.0%; and at the rural level it was 33.1%. And unpaid employment stood at 11.1%; in urban and rural areas it registered 5.5% and 21.8%, respectively.
