Osiptel: Fixed internet connections grew 10.8% during 2021

Fixed internet connections grew 10.8% during 2021. Thus, as of December, 3 million 061,044 connections were recorded; that is, more than 297,000 were added, reported the Supervisory Body for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Osiptel).

The supervisory body highlighted that this is the second consecutive year in which growth remained in double digits. Likewise, he explained that the contracting of the residential internet segment, dedicated to the home, reached 2 million 820,750 connections. This is equivalent to a rise of 12.9% compared to December 2020 and represents 92.1% of all hires.

For its part, the commercial internet segment, dedicated to companies, deepened its fall by falling in almost all regions and losing -9.1%, reaching 240,294 connections, equivalent to a 7.9% share.

Fixed internet connections by operating company

During 2021, Telefónica del Perú was the company that led the fixed internet offer in Peru and achieved 1 million 823,643 connections. However, Osiptel indicates that “it had a reduction in its market share, which was 59.6%. Thus, for the first time, the operating company registered a participation of less than 60%”.

Grupo Claro obtained 844,511 connections, for which its participation was 27.6%. Meanwhile, the group of companies Wi-NET and Optical Networks (Optical Technologies) ranked third after growing by more than four times the number of connections in a year and obtaining 4.5% of the market.

With this, the Entel group was in fourth position after losing participation and representing 3.7% of connections. On the other hand, other companies, such as Hughes del Perú (1.3%), Wow (0.8%) and P y D Telecom (0.5%) increased their participation.

Regions increased their connectivity

Last year, almost all regions increased their connectivity. The regions that had the greatest variation were Amazonas (55.3%), Ica (31.2%), Apurímac (22.5%) and Ucayali (20.3%). While Loreto was the only one that fell and fell -19.5% in the number of connections.

Lima continued as the main market with more than half of national connections (56%), followed by Arequipa (5.6%), La Libertad (5.4%), Callao (5.2%) and Piura (3, 6%).
