The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) announced that it will begin talks with companies in the dairy sector with the intention of proposing solutions and meeting the demands of the hundreds of dairy farmers in the country.

Given the concern of dairy farmers about the low price of their products, the minister Oscar Zea commented that you cannot pay S/ 1 for a liter of milk “when a liter of water costs S/ 2.50. That is why we need to talk (with the dairy industry) and sit down to propose solutions so that farmers are served.”

“The difficult situation of dairy farmers is leading them to send their cows to slaughterhouses. For this reason, we need to attend to small farmers, we need to produce milk, we have potential and we must guarantee the food security of our population”, stressed the head of Midagri before the press.

The statements of Zea they occur at the gates of a national strike called for March 15.

Precisely a week ago, the official admitted the existence of a dairy monopoly, for which he assured that the same price should be paid for domestic fresh milk as for imported dairy.

“Here we have a monopoly that imports milk from other countries at S/ 2 a liter when national producers are paid half for fresh milk; at least, they (the industry) should collect the milk within Peru with the same price that they import,” said the official on the radio program Surco norteño in Chiclayo.

Minister Zea also announced a package of regulations in favor of agriculture. One of them involves the creation of the Water Fund, which will allow the collection of around S/ 1,000 million in one year.
