Hope for Europe’s tourism: EU certificate and Americans

The European tourism industry is hoping, but the numbers are still a long way from pre-pandemic 2019.

Better than last year, but still a long way from the 2019 results – before the pandemic. This is what tourism looks like in Europe at the moment. The delta variant and new regulations are making many people afraid of traveling again.

The European Union’s Covid-19 travel certificate, launched on Thursday, could offer some security, but getting to 2019 levels remains a dream.

In Greece, tourism accounts for one fifth of economic output. The Greek central bank previously assumed that it would come to 50 percent of revenues compared to 2019. Now this forecast has been corrected down to 40 percent. 33 million people visited Greece before the pandemic.

Spain is hoping for 46 percent compared to 2019. It assumed that a good 40 million tourists would visit the country this year, but has corrected the number upwards by 5 million.

Spain will not come close to 2019 either.

The US-Americans are a ray of hope. Above the pond there is a great desire to travel, especially a desire to travel to Europe, especially southern Europe.
