Almost 75% of Peruvians spend impulsively

Impulsive or unplanned spending is one of the main traits that define banked Peruvians between the ages of 18 and 55, according to a study by Swiss banking software firm Temenos.

Research reveals that about 75% of Peruvians spend impulsively at least twice a year.

In detail, 41.3% make this type of purchase every month, 25.4% every six months and 8.2% weekly.

:

In accordance with Enrique Ramos O’Reilly, regional director of Temenos, this characteristic reflects that Peruvians when making their purchases, like the rest of Latin Americans, tend to get carried away by their emotions. Likewise, he points out that the “ups and downs” that the region’s economy has experienced makes it difficult “to predict anything in our culture.”

Regarding the amounts, 62.2% of the study participants said they had made unplanned purchases for up to S/ 250, while 27.6% claimed to have spent between S/ 251 and S/ 1,000.

Regarding the means of payment, 45.3% said that their impulsive expenses are paid with cash and that they always have funds for this type of purchase, while a little more than 23% said that they use their savings account .

In that sense, Ramos O’Reilly stressed that most of these expenses in Peruvians “are with their own resources” and do not always mean indebtedness.

Finally, 44.3% said that they use an expense control plan only for fixed expenses, while more than 11% confessed never doing it.

The study involved 450 Peruvians over the age of 18 with monthly incomes between S/ 1,000 and S/ 15,000. It was held between January 24 and 25 of this year.
