The head of the Iranian diplomatic mission in Ecuador, Ahamad Pabarja, said, during a visit to rice fields in Daule on Wednesday, that his country has a deficit of one million tons of rice, so it could buy this product from Ecuador.
Last year, according to data from the Ecuadorian embassy in Turkey, the level of exports from Ecuador to Iran had been 164 million dollars, according to the Iranian diplomat. A favorable balance for the country, mainly due to bananas.
He added that, due to the economic sanctions imposed by the United States on his country, trade with Ecuador has been developed by third countries and that 67% of the bananas consumed in his country come from Ecuador.
“The main objective of this new mission of mine in Ecuador is to increase the level of trade between the two countries. This time I will focus on the rice sector,” said Pabarja, who added that he had a meeting for this purpose four months ago with the Ecuadorian Minister of Agriculture and that today’s trip to Daule is within the framework of that project.
In Iran, more than 2.2 million tons of rice are produced annually, but they also import more than one million tons; and, according to Pabarja, they want a part of the latter to be covered by Ecuador.
Currently, Ecuador does not have an embassy in Iran, which is why the diplomat said that relations are with “a single wing”, and that complicates trade relations. For this reason, the Iranians asked to create a commercial delegation to travel to Iran and have direct contact and meetings with possible local partners. (I)
