Exports from the Special Economic Zones (SEZ) reached US$ 84 million in 2021. The amount represents an increase of 30% compared to 2020, and 34% compared to 2019, a year without a pandemic for the country, reported the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur).
The ministry also specified that in the last year the ZEE generated more than 2,400 direct jobs in the regions of Arequipa, Moquegua, Piura and Arequipa.
Of the nine SEZs that Peru has, only the Matarani Special Development Zone (ZED Matarani), the Ilo Special Development Zone (ZED Ilo), the Paita Special Development Zone (ZED Paita) and the Free Zone of Tacna (Zofratacna).
Last year, shipments made from ZED Paita reached US$75 million; at the ZED Matarani, shipments were made for US$ 5 million; while Zofratacna reached US$ 4 million.
Main products and markets
The main products exported from the SEZs included beverage concentrates, fresh mango, dehydrated seaweed and geomembranes.
Exports reached 37 international markets, where Ecuador (30% of the total), Colombia (28%), and the United States (11%) stood out.
