The Association of Automotive Companies of Ecuador (AEADE) sent an open letter to President Guillermo Lasso asking for the improvement of the quality of fuels marketed in the country.
According to the AEADE, the amount of sulfur in fuels, according to international standards, should not exceed 10 parts per million (ppm) to reduce the effects of pollution as much as possible. However, it indicates that the INEN rules and regulations allow gasoline to reach 650 parts per million in certain areas, and in diesel it can even go up to 7,000 ppm.
By comparison, this type of fuel was banned in Europe more than 20 years ago, when the Euro 3 standards, which still apply in Ecuador, were revoked.
While, on average, in Latin America in most countries the Euro 5 quality standard already governs. In Europe they already go for Euro 6.2.
“In addition to the environmental and public health negligence involved in maintaining toxic fuels, vehicle owners are also affected, since they end up privately facing the wear and premature repairs of engines, manufactured for international quality fuels. In the same way, companies are limited when offering more modern and efficient low-emission technology vehicles due to incompatibility with the poorest quality available fuels”, he indicates in his AEADE letter.
The association adds that the Ministry of Energy and Petroecuador have not fulfilled the State’s public commitment to increase to Euro5 quality, as stipulated in Executive Decree 1158 of 2020.
Therefore, they ask to take the necessary measures so that from the second quarter of this year super gasoline has a standard of 95 octane. As well as that the Extra and the Ecopaís be 89 octane from 2023. A measure of increase that should also include diesel. (I)
