The Supervisory Body for Private Investment in Telecommunications (Osiptel), reported this February 21 that the mobile market Peru was marked by recovery in 2021, after more than 3.7 million mobile lines were added to the market as recorded by the Punku tool, the highest positive rate in the last five years, a significant break compared to the results of 2020 and 2019, in which setbacks were recorded.

In this way, last year the mobile market closed with a historical record of 43.1 million active mobile lines, 9.6% more than at the end of 2020.

“The greater need for connectivity, virtual classes and the Christmas campaign were some of the factors that impacted the dynamism of active lines and penetration grew to 129.8 lines per 100 inhabitants,” the agency said in a press release. .

Increase by operators

In this line, increases were observed in the number of lines according to contractual modality. Of the total mobile lines, 6.9% corresponded to the prepaid mode (26.2 million lines), while the remaining 39.1% to the postpaid mode (16.9 million lines).

Although all the operating companies reported increases in the number of active mobile lines compared to the same period in December 2020, the company Bitel was the one with the most lines (1,244,342 lines), followed by Movistar (1,122,372 lines). , Claro (1,059,655 lines) and Entel (310,660 lines). Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) such as Guinea Mobile (17,006 lines) and Flash (16,976 lines) also did so.

In this way, the companies Movistar and Claro obtained the largest share of the mobile market with 30.7% and 28.4% respectively, in line with the proportion of 2020, while the company Entel reduced its market share by 1.25 percentage points. share to 21.3% and the Bitel company added 1.3 percentage points and gained 19.3% of the market.

Lambayeque, Madre de Dios, Piura and San Martín with the highest percentage of mobile lines

At the end of 2021, the Lima region concentrated 11.3 million active mobile lines, equivalent to 26.3% of the national total, with a percentage increase in lines of 3.9% compared to December 2020. However, the regions that led the percentage advance in the same period were Lambayeque (13.2%), Madre de Dios (11.1%), Piura (10.5%) and San Martin (10.5%).
