Oil, flour, blackberry and corn rise in price, after an increase in diesel and extra gasoline and eco-country in Ecuador

Experts indicate that in the coming days increases could be registered in more products and in the cost of taxi races and truck freight.

Hugo Lara frequently goes to the Montebello market, in the northwest of Guayaquil. As usual, she buys the basic necessities. He was surprised by the increase in the value of the blackberry box, because before he bought it for $ 3 and these days he paid $ 4.

Alfredo Salas also buys daily in the central market of El Empalme for his business of catering. Since last Sunday he saw increases in certain products such as $ 0.10 more for avocado, $ 0.05 more for each tomato and they no longer give him three corn for one dollar but two.

In the Central and Caraguay markets of Guayaquil the effect is the same. Some traders indicated that the pound of default until yesterday was sold at $ 1.25 and from today the price will rise because wholesalers are also raising the values, although they did not specify it.

They offered corn for $ 0.50 each and avocado for $ 0.80. They indicated that they gave the products at these prices if the customer made a minimum purchase of $ 5.00; otherwise they cost more.

Criteria divided into pricing of diesel and extra gasoline and eco-country in Ecuador

These cost increases, according to experts, are part of the impacts of the new prices of diesel and extra gasoline and eco-country that President Guillermo Lasso set by executive decree, by which he also suspended the application of the band system that regulated the gradual rise of these.

The economist Guillermo Granja explained that, although the price setting for diesel went from $ 1.69 to $ 1.90, that is, an increase of $ 0.21, it does not mean that costs will rise by that value.

“With the rise and freezing of fuels, it is not that $ 0.21 will be raised to staple products, but rather that the increase depends on the value of the freight and this is transferred proportionally to the products that are brought in,” he mentioned. .

A freight that cost $ 100 and goes to $ 120 with a load valued at $ 300 implies an increase of $ 0.07, he exemplified.

“Any increase in prices is going to be passed on to the final consumer. The one who brings the product raises the price, the wholesaler also and the one who buys to dispatch in the store also, then follows the chain of increase “, he indicated.

In processed foods there is also a dragged rise from several months ago when the increase in fuel was every 30 days.

For example, in the Modelo market, in Ambato, merchants Emma Núñez and Jaqueline Solís indicated that the five-liter oil used to be sold for $ 5.50, but today the value is $ 12.

The butter went from $ 0.80 to $ 1.25 and the quintal of flour from $ 31 to $ 36.

A few days ago the president ordered all the authorities of the national government to protect the family, rural and peasant economy.

“I have instructed governors and mayors of all provinces to enforce, without exception of any kind, the official prices of rice, milk, fruits and all the products of the basic basket,” he said.

Guillermo Lasso announces suspension of monthly increases in fuel prices

Larry Yumibanda, president of the Guayaquil Economy Circle, said that the rise in certain products will be reflected in inflation in October and with more impact in November.

“There is a blow that is going to be reflected not only with food, but also with transportation, production, and the family basket,” he added.

In September, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) stood at 105.58, which measures the changes in values of the products most consumed by households and is the basis for the inflation indicator figure, which in the same month it was 0.02%.

Food alone constitutes 32.03% of the products in the CPI basket and represents 22.45% of the index’s weighting. The monthly inflation of the CPI in food was -0.28% in September. Transportation was 0.0415%, which is another element that influenced the CPI, followed by education (0.0398%) and accommodation, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (0.0056%).

Yumibanda is sure that there will be a variation in all these measurements and pointed out that the prices of freight, taxi races, perhaps digital platforms could increase.

Farm stated: “If a truck freight used to charge me $ 10 to get to a destination, perhaps it will charge me $ 12. We also don’t know how long it will last (…) Now what we are going to see is looking for the substitute good” .

The economist made reference to the fact that citizens can choose other products to replace the one that has the rise. In the case of transport, the same is looking for other alternatives to save money. (I)
