In 2021, imports achieved a new historical record in the last 20 years, reaching just over US$50,843 million, which meant a growth of 40.7% compared to 2020 and 19.9% compared to 2019, prior to the pandemic, reported the Center for Research on Global Economy and Business of the Association of Exporters (Cien-Adex).
Carlos Adriano Pérez, head of Economic Studies of the Hundred-Adexexplained that the positive behavior was based on the higher volumes due to the recovery of the economy, the better prices of oil, inputs and main foods.
By sectors, metallurgical imports stood out with US$ 17,267 million and an increase of 37.4%; cell phones with an evolution of 52.4% and tugboats due to their dynamism (129.7%).
Meanwhile, the Peruvian Institute of Economy (IPE) estimated that, between the 2019 and 2021 periods, the products that had the greatest incidence in the variation in imports were:
- Gasoline and oil (+2.1%): due to the fact that the reactivation of the economy and the increase in prices contributed to the increase in the value of imported fuels.
- Laptops (+1.2) and cell phones (+0.9%): mobile computer imports doubled due to the home office; while the acquisition of cell phones increased by 37%.
- Vehicles for freight transport (+0.9%)
- Soybean oil (+0.8%)
BCRP:
On the other hand, imports of precious metals, board games and paper with cardboard fell by -0.2% respectively. The former decreased in response to capacity restrictions that caused the demand limit for billiard games; while the purchase of bond sheets was shortened due to the implementation of teleworking.
Foreign purchases of passenger vehicles fell by -0.4%, given the increase in demand for delivery services.
