175,000 homes already have natural gas in the north of the country

Teresa Farfán, a housewife in her sixties, finalizes the details in her home located in the Jorge Chávez human settlement in Talara, to receive recognition for becoming the 4,000 natural gas connection in Piura.

The concessionaire for this region, Quavii, has 700 connections in Talara; while in the entire north there are 175,000 that have been developed to date by Promigas, Quavii’s parent company.

In terms of savings, Doña Teresa tells us that if she used to consume a ball of LPG monthly for which he paid S/ 60, today he will pay around S/ 40 (including consumption and installation cost) for natural gas. “Those S / 20 savings make me think that I could finish the second floor of my house,” he narrates.

Six houses away is the Maridey restaurant. Deysi Cobeñasowner of the business, used between two and three cylinders of LPG per month, but today he pays half thanks to his natural gas connection. “As soon as I found out that they were offering the service here, I agreed to one. It’s a tremendous saving,” he said.

According Gasnorp, households would save S/ 300 per year per user. Meanwhile, the main industries of Piura would have savings of US$ 41.4 million in the first 3 years of operation.

The gas breaks through

The goal of promigas is to reach 300,000 homes with natural gas in northern Peru, which includes Lambayeque, Chiclayo, Piura, Trujillo, Pacasmayo, Cajamarca, Chimbote and Huaraz (see infographic).

Meanwhile, the investments made to date exceed US$ 350 million, and in addition an infrastructure of 3,500 kilometers of distribution networks has been built between its two concessions in the five departments of northern Peru, which has benefited more of 700,000 people within the area.

Piura, unlike other cities, feeds its concession with the gas that is extracted from its desert fields. Juan Manuel Rojas Payanpresident of Promigas, stressed that this year the construction of the gas pipeline in this region will be completed and the entire energy distribution system will be put into operation, including the provinces of Sechura and Paita.
