From today, workers have an instrument that protects against violence and harassment at work. This is the Convention on the Elimination of Violence and Harassment in the world of work, which was debated and approved on January 31 last, in the Congress of the republic, at the insistence of the Ministry of Labor and Employment Promotion (MTPE). The legislative resolution approving the Convention was published yesterday, in a single article.
Convention 190 of the International Labor Organization (ILO) protects workers from violence and harassment in the workplace in the public or private sector, formal or informal, as well as in urban or rural areas. It also determines the places and circumstances where these behaviors and practices occur.
Since January, the MTPE insisted and requested both the Board of Spokespersons, as well as the president of the CongressPrioritize the opinion of the draft legislative resolution on the plenary agenda. Finally, its unanimous approval was achieved with 110 votes in Parliament.
Convention 190 defines what violence and harassment is in the world of work, as well as the expression “gender-based violence and harassment” as those that are directed against people because of their sex or gender and includes sexual harassment .
Also, it specifies that every member state that ratifies the Convention must respect, promote and ensure the enjoyment of the right of every person to a world of work free from violence and harassment.
