The Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS) clarified a few minutes ago that at the moment the IESS has not analyzed the possibility of increasing the contributions of the affiliates, nor modifying the age for their retirement. He did so after learning of countless rejection reactions that were generated after the president of the entity, Francisco Cepeda, made statements in the media commenting that he is preparing a bill that would be sent for analysis by the Executive and that contained the minus four points.
Increase of years for retirement, adjust the calculation of pensions, creation of personal accounts and that the contribution of the State to the IESS is with respect to the GDP.
Although the statements were public, the IESS clarified that the president of the IESS Board of Directors maintains open channels for dialogue with different sectors. He indicated that he has met with retirees, affiliates, workers, employers, among others, to listen to their requirements and define solutions. and methodologies that are viable to guarantee the sustainability of the institution over time.
He indicated that of these permanent dialogues, “which will continue in the coming months”, agreed proposals will be drawn up to translate into a project to reform the Social Security Law, in which, among other topics, cost control and solutions to solve the fiscal deficit of the Old Age and Death Disability Insurance will be discussed.
Once the proposals of the different actors have been collected, It will be reported to the IESS Board of Directors and subsequently to the corresponding authorities for analysis.
Social Security “has not analyzed an increase in contributions or modify the retirement age,” the statement said.
He also recalled that since the beginning of his administration, Francisco Cepeda has expressed the need to generate a national dialogue around the reforms and restructuring of the IESS.
In its statement, the IESS says that the current administration ensures the long-term sustainability of the entity, and the correct management of resources in a technical and not a political way.
The situation of IESS is complex, since it has more expenses than income and is not sustainable over time. According to studies and statements by the authorities, there may be problems in the coming months and years for the payment of pensions and the health fund. The State maintains debts for more than $8,000 million with the IESS. (I)
