Oil spill: Repsol can now define the affected areas to analyze the environmental impact

Repsol reported that inspection work continues in areas of special environmental protection, after the oil spill on January 15.

The company recalled that they already have the necessary authorizations to delimit the status of the work areas and continue with the environmental impact analysis, although, to complete these actions, they await the permits to work promptly in the Ancón Reserve and in the National Reserve. of the System of Guano Islands, Islets and Points.

Repsol added that the areas affected by the spill were distinguished depending on their biodiversity characteristics, which allows the application of appropriate techniques for each space, in order to protect the environment, avoiding – for example – removing more sand than necessary and preserving biodiversity.

It is necessary to remember that Repsol must remove a remainder of 2,200 barrels of oil that remained in the 4.5-kilometre pipeline that connects the La Pampilla refinery with Terminal Multiboyas No. 2, before proceeding with the removal of the submarine distribution system. of hydrocarbons (PLEM, for its acronym in English).

Process

Repsol explained that, after an exhaustive analysis, they define the cleaning techniques that must be applied on each beach. Once a positive result is achieved, it is called a “clean beach”.

From there, the beach will receive another level of protection to prevent it from being stained by the effect of the wind or the tides. Finally, the characterization of the soil will be carried out and, depending on the results, a remediation plan will be implemented if it is necessary to apply it in that specific area.
