Logistical problems do not fade commercial breath and demand growth for Halloween

Businesses report significant demand for items to date, at a difficult time to import due to high container costs.

An unexpected commercial breath has been experienced since the beginning of October, by businesses that sell products for the Halloween holiday, which is celebrated on Sunday the 31st.

These establishments report a high demand for these items, which in many cases exceeds the sales figures of 2019, the last prepandemic year.

During a tour, Diario EL UNIVERSO found that masks, costumes and various products to decorate spaces with these motifs or accessories are the items most in demand in the different stores, in which administrators and managers explained the causes of this increase.

For example, in Guimsa in the Policentro shopping center, Isabela Guim, the company’s Marketing and Purchasing Manager, confirmed the growth in demand, especially for accessories for customers to put together their own costumes.

“People look for this DIY trend, because they look for the economy, then they can complement their wardrobe and buy an accessory,” said Guim, who pointed out that Guimsa did not import costumes for this year, but many accessories are offered to promote this trend. .

Meanwhile, Esther Romero, administrator of FantasĆas El Conquistador, also highlighted the growth of the movement in the local, especially of customers in search of accessories for Halloween.

He indicated that the momentum began to be felt from October 1 when the establishment began with the sale of items for the time.

Romero analyzed the movement and compared it with 2019, the last prepandemic year, as he assured that 2020 was an atypical year with which it is impossible to make a real comparison.

“You feel more spirit, better than 2019. More or less if you notice 40% more, you feel the spirit of the people,” said the administrator.

However, the growth in demand does not go hand in hand with supply.

Guim and Romero acknowledged that global logistics problems due to the lack of containers, which has led to an increase in maritime freight costs, have taken a toll on the amount of merchandise that businesses are able to import.

“Yes, there is a lot of demand, but there is not as much supply as in other years for this conjunctural issue of freight,” explained Guim, who pointed out that before importing a container cost $ 4,000, but now the price has climbed to $ 17,000.

This has led to imports falling this year between 30% and 40%, although the directive assured that they have all their items covered.

Romero, for his part, indicated that they have not been able to bring large decoration merchandise due to the problem of containers.

“We are going out, trying to supply, because this has always been the spirit of the store, to have the largest possible assortment,” said Romero, whose expectations until the end of this month are that sales will grow up to 40%.

Meanwhile, in the commercial center, in the center of Guayaquil, costumes and items for the date also have their space. “People are looking for more things for Halloween, costumes, accessories to put candy, etc.,” said Manuel CrespĆn, who runs a small novelty business.

Meanwhile, supermarket chains also expect a significant demand for items for this date.

CorporaciĆ³n Favorita, owner of the Megamaxi, Supermaxi, Gran Aki and Aki chains, indicated to this newspaper that the Halloween festivities have been gaining strength in recent years, and that despite the fact that in 2020 the pandemic halted this growth somewhat, they expect this year the reactivation of the activity.

“We are including candy kiosks in some stores and several local manufacturers have developed sweets and packaging allusive to the date,” reported CorporaciĆ³n Favorita, which also has accessories, costumes and other items for this celebration in its stores.

Shopping centers are not far behind and seek to take advantage of this commercial momentum to attract more visitors.

CityMall is one of these. The mall promotes The House of Terror, a show which is available from October 9 and will be open until the next 31. The value of tickets is $ 3 and the minimum age for entry is 12 years.

“We propose to our clients to be entertained by taking photos with a Chroma screen, so that they can choose the funds, and the delivery of candies at the exchange points that we have called” terror points “, which will be decorated accordingly. with the theme ā€, explained GarcĆa.

Another activity is a TikTok Challenge called Thriller Challenge, in which they will invite the public to record a video in the TikTok Zone and participate in the drawing for a purchase order for $ 250.

This activity will begin on Monday 25 until October 31. “There will be characters allusive to Halloween in this TikTok Zone so that customers can take photos with them,” Garcia concluded.

In addition, the shopping center takes advantage of the date to promote discounts in different stores on its social networks to attract customers. (I)
