Our country has at least 33 million inhabitants and at the end of 2021 it had more 43 million active mobile lines and more of 27 million accessed the internetaccording to the president of the Supervisory Body for Private Investment in Telecommunications (OSIPTEL)Rafael Eduardo Muente, whose administration is about to end in the coming days.
There are more than 3 million fixed internet connections, a figure that has been increasing due to the conditions of the pandemic. On the contrary, fixed telephone lines have continued to decline and in the last year they reached just over 2 million, it was reported during the Forum “Milestones and challenges for better telecommunications services in Peru” that OSIPTEL held to report that its advances in regulation.
More savings and competition in the market
The telecommunications market has become more diversified in recent years. With regard to mobile lines in 2015, Movistar was the company with the largest share with 54%, followed by Claro with 39%. For 2021, the offer is more equitable: Movistar has a 30.7% stake, followed by Claro and Entel, with 28.4% and 21.3%, respectively.
This increased competition and the implementation of stronger regulatory measures by OSIPTEL has translated into a reduction in rates and therefore savings for the pockets of Peruvians. In the period from 2016 to 2021, a saving of S/ 17,837 million is reported and it is estimated that it will increase by 9.72% when the end of 2022.
At a qualitative level
78% of Peruvians reported having problems with their fixed internet service during 2021, either due to slow browsing speed or intermittent service. The same problems were presented for 56% mobile phone users. Only 29% of users stated that they were completely satisfied with their internet service at home, where Claro and Entel services stand out, with 41% and 39% respectively, in level of satisfaction.
