Fertilizer prices will peak

By Jackeline Cardenas I.

In 2021, the international fertilizer price index accumulated a growth of 163.9%, which has a great impact in Peru, since 89.5% of fertilizers are of imported origin. This sustained increase makes the development of agricultural activity more expensive and raises the final price of food, said Carolina Ramírez, director of Economic Studies of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri).

The World Bank had already reported that the price of fertilizers on the international market will reach its peak this year. This increase is linked to crude oil and natural gas, which are the raw material for the production of this product.

Midagri forecasts that prices will fall from 2023. In the meantime, it has been taking some measures to reduce this impact. From January 18, the delivery of the Wanuchay bonus for S/ 350 was scheduled for producers who own less than two hectares of crops and have not benefited from the Yanapay bonus. In addition, the possibility of installing a fertilizer plant based on Bayóvar phosphates in Piura will be explored.
