The pandemic accelerated digital transformation in 95% of Peruvian SMEs

The new normality driven by the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the digital transformation of 95% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Peru, according to data from a study conducted by Microsoft and Edelman.

The research also details that more than 94% of SMEs invested in technology in the last year. Among the technologies that they consider to be a priority are portable computers (85%), as well as storage/computing in the cloud (52%), software for video calls (46%), and software for collaborative work (41%).

Remote work in Peru

On the other hand, the study in which 80 SMEs participated nationwide indicates that to date 65% of small and medium-sized Peruvian companies have a remote or hybrid work format.

However, 41% indicate that when the pandemic ends they will return to the 100% face-to-face modality; meanwhile, one in 10 assures that they will maintain remote work.

“Almost two years after the pandemic, we see a clear evolution in the digital transformation processes of Peruvian SMEs. This change is evident when observing that 76% of SMEs consider that technology will be important regardless of the work model they apply, be it face-to-face, remote or hybrid”, emphasized Mariana Villacorta, commercial manager for Small and Medium Enterprises of Microsoft South.

Although most companies rate the impact of remote work on productivity as positive, they state that the main barrier has been internet connectivity.

Data-driven decisions

The results of the study called “Impact of COVID-19 on SMEs: digital acceleration and a paradigm shift”, also indicate that 96% of companies make decisions based on data.

While 8 out of 10 SMEs plan to implement data intelligence technology and more than 50% of companies hired personnel specialized in data management.
