Air unions ask to guarantee fuel, despite the fact that there is no shortage

After four days of dictating the stoppage of activities at the La Pampilla refinery, the airline unions spoke out, this last Friday, February 4, on the transport situation of the aeronautical industry after the measure, despite the fact that the Government has ruled out damage any.

Through a statement, the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA), the Association of International Air Transport Companies (AETAI), the Peruvian Association of Air Companies (APEA) and Lima Airport Partners (LAP) stated that they trust the legal framework to establish corresponding measures against acts that harm health, the ecosystem and biodiversity, respecting due process.

“As is public knowledge, the suspension of operations at the La Pampilla refinery will seriously affect economic activity in Peru and the national and international air sector will not be the exception, since it is supplied in at least 60% of its operation by this plant”, assured the aeronautical associations in a press release.

In this line, the unions affirm that their transport operations “are at risk of not being able to materialize”, which would affect “the displacement of thousands of people, the entry and shipment of cargo and merchandise, as well as the development of the activity national and international tourism.

However, they urged the authorities to review all operational safety processes to prevent an environmental and social disaster from repeating itself.

It should be noted that the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) ruled out that the temporary closure of the La Pampilla refinery (Relapasa), operated by Repsol, could cause a shortage of fuels in the local market in the short term.

“According to reports from Repsol and Osinergmin, there is no threat of fuel shortages. But it is a situation, with the passing of days and if the company does not solve the requirements of OEFAit could happen”, said Jorge Chávez Cresta, deputy minister in charge of Hydrocarbons, during the session of the Energy and Mines Commission of Congress that took place this Tuesday, February 1.
