The cleaning of the beaches and the areas affected by the oil spill that occurred on January 15 on the coast of Ventanilla would end at the end of March, Repsol announced this Thursday. In this way, the Spanish company delays its previous schedule by a month, where it specified that the remediation work would end in February.
According to Reuters, José Terol, head of Repsol’s control center and in charge of the oil remediation and cleanup operation, pointed out that the “more complex and specialized” work is “linked to the removal of the remaining oil from remote rocky cliffs, which are more difficult to reach due to strong waves.”
“That final part of the work is going to cost us a little more, but we estimate that we will be in a situation, let’s say acceptable, at the end of March more or less,” he specified.
However, Terol pointed out that “this is in an optimistic scenario”; Likewise, he added that “in the sea, the stain reached its maximum extension of 105 square kilometers and now they are small stains.”
Finally, he indicated that to date, Repsol has cleaned up around 33% of the spill.
