The service sector was the branch that concentrated the most employed population in the last quarter of 2021, according to the INEC

The unemployment rate stood at 4.7%, almost 1% less than the fourth quarter of the previous year when it reached 5.6%.

In the last quarter of 2021, that is, from October to December, the services sector was the branch that concentrated the most employed population at a national scale. The data comes from the National Survey of Employment, Unemployment and Underemployment (Enemdu) published by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC).

This segment grouped 33.9% (1.3% more than the same quarter of 2020) followed by the agriculture and mining branch with 32.0%. Manufacturing had a positive performance at the end of 2021, in the last quarter registered an employed population rate of 10.5%. In 2020, this same activity registered 9.2%.

In the last quarter of 2021, compared to the same period in 2020, some 477,000 people moved into the group of those in adequate or full employment, in which you work at least 40 hours per week and receive monthly income equal to or greater than the unified basic salary (SBU).

The city of Cuenca presented the highest rate of adequate employment (54.1%), in relation to those of Quito, Guayaquil, Machala and Ambato. In the quarter from October to December 2021, on a national scale, the adequate employment rate for men was higher than that of women. The same behavior is observed at the urban and rural levels.

In the case of unemployment, the indicator improved compared to 2020. The unemployment rate stood at 4.7%, almost 1% less than the fourth quarter of the previous year when it reached 5.6%. At the city level, Quito was the one that registered the highest rate with 9.9%, followed by Machala with 6.9% and Cuenca with 6.6%.

During the months of October to December 2021, of the total number of people with employment, 43.5% were in the formal sector and 50.2% in the informal sector.

In the same period, the highest proportion of employment in urban areas was concentrated in employment in the formal sector with 54.6%, the opposite occurs in rural areas, where 22.5% of employment was found in the formal sector.

The groups with the highest proportion of employment in the informal sector were those over 65 years of age and those of young people between 15 and 24 years of age. (I)
